The Shala River — Lumi i Shalës — is the sight people come to northern Albania for: a narrow canyon of impossibly clear, turquoise water hemmed in by limestone cliffs, often called the "Thailand of Europe." The only way in is by boat, and the shortest, calmest route starts right here in Fierzë. As the hotel that runs its own boats, we take you in directly — no minibus relay from Shkodër, no waiting around at a crowded pier.

A typical shared boat tour crosses Lake Koman from Fierzë and turns up into the Shala River, where the boat moors so you can swim in the cold, clear water and lie on the pebble beaches before the ride back. It's a half-day on the water through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Albanian Alps.

• Shared boat tour — €25 per person. Join a scheduled group departure, round trip from Fierzë. The easy, sociable, best-value way to see the canyon.
• Private boat charter — €250, up to 10 people. The whole boat is yours. Set your own pace, choose your stops on the Shala River or Lake Koman, stay as long as you like.
• Speedboat — €350, up to 6 people. Fast and flexible, captain included. Reach hidden corners of the canyon most boats never get to, or save time.

What to bring

• Swimwear and a towel — the water is the whole point.
• Sun protection: the canyon is bright and shade is limited on the water.
• Water shoes if you have them — the beaches are pebble.
• Cash in euros; there are no card machines on the lake.

Best time to go

Boat tours run from about mid-April to mid-October. July and August are warmest and busiest; late spring and early autumn are quieter, cooler and beautiful. Mornings are calmest on the water — another reason many guests stay the night in Fierzë and start early, before the day boats arrive from Koman.
