Crossing Lake Koman between Koman and Fierzë
The boat ride across Lake Koman is one of the great journeys of the Balkans — a long, narrow reservoir on the Drin river, walled by steep green mountains that make it feel like a fjord. For most travellers it's the link in the chain between Shkodër, the Shala River and Valbonë valley, and the search that brings them here is simple: how do I get from Koman to Fierzë?
The answer is by water. As the boat operator based at the Fierzë end, Hotel Raja runs the crossing and can sort your trip in either direction. You don't need to decode confusing timetables from three different operators — tell us your date and where you're coming from, and we'll line up the boat.
Your options
- Shared boat — €25 per person. Join the scheduled crossing of Lake Koman between Koman and Fierzë. The classic, scenic, best-value way to travel.
- Private speedboat — €350, up to 6 people. Captain included. Cross on your own schedule, add a detour into the Shala canyon, or simply travel faster.
How long does it take?
The scheduled boat crossing takes roughly two to three hours depending on stops and conditions; a speedboat is considerably quicker. Either way it's a journey you'll want to be awake for — bring a jacket, as it can be cool and breezy on the open water even in summer.
Planning the connection
Fierzë is small and remote, so timing matters. Many travellers cross in the morning and continue to Valbonë the same day; others stay overnight at Hotel Raja right by the Fierzë port and take the Shala River tour before moving on. If you're walking the Peaks of the Balkans, this crossing is the natural way onto the Albanian side. Message us with your plan and we'll tell you the cleanest way to fit the boat, the hotel and the onward transfer together.
